Agastya Arghya is the dawn offering of water to the sage Agastya, identified with the star Canopus, when the star rises again in the pre-dawn sky after its months of invisibility. Tradition links his return to the end of the monsoon, and an old belief, echoed by Kālidāsa, holds that muddy monsoon waters clear once Agastya rises. The sage is remembered for humbling the Vindhya and settling in the south. Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Bengali calendars all mark the day. How the day is fixed: The pañcāṅga takes the day on which the sidereal (Lahiri) Sun crosses a longitude threshold scaled to the local latitude. This approximates the first pre-dawn rise of Canopus rather than computing that rise directly. Keep in mind: Because Canopus sits low in the southern sky, southern places reach the day earlier than northern ones. Whether the star is actually visible depends on the horizon, the weather and latitude, so the date is best treated as guidance and checked against local custom and the dawn sky. This year: The 2027 date shown here is worked out from sunrise at the place you chose, so in another city the same day can fall a day earlier or later. Dawn arghya: Devotees rise before daybreak and offer water toward the south-eastern horizon where the star rises. Some add tulasī or flowers to the water. Temple calendars: Some temples announce the day in their annual calendars, and it appears more often in southern pañcāṅgas than in household practice. There is no single all-India liturgy, so regional and family custom decide the details. Worth remembering: Agastya Arghya is fixed by the star's return and the Sun's position, not by a tithi, so it is not tied to any lunar festival. In Bengal the saying 'Agastya yātrā' and the caution against travel on the first day of Bhādra grow from the same Vindhya story, but they are separate from the arghya. Each region remembers Agastya in its own way. Tamil homes speak of the short sage of Potikai who gave Tamil its grammar, Kannada homes of the kamaṇḍalu at Talakaveri from which the Kāveri flowed, and Kerala of Agastyakūṭam at the southern end of the Sahyādri. Gujarat, Maharashtra and Odisha know the Vindhya story well but seldom keep the arghya at home. The surest guide is the way the elders of one's own house have kept the day.
