நாளின் மகத்துவம்

Akal Bodhon, the 'untimely awakening', is the rite on Āśvina Śukla Ṣaṣṭhī that opens Bengal's autumn Durgā Pūjā. The goddess's great worship properly belongs to spring, but Bengali tradition, following the Kṛttivāsa Rāmāyaṇa, holds that Rāma awakened Durgā in autumn before his war with Rāvaṇa. He worshipped her with 108 blue lotuses, and when one was missing he was ready to offer his own lotus-like eye, at which the goddess appeared and blessed him. Śāradīyā Durgā Pūjā grew from that out-of-season worship.

பஞ்சாங்க விதியும் கணிப்பும்

  • How the day is fixed: The day is the one on which Āśvina Śukla Ṣaṣṭhī, the sixth day of the bright fortnight, prevails at local sunrise.
  • Keep in mind: The tithi is read at sunrise, but the bodhan itself is performed in the evening, after the morning kalpārambha. Because sunrise differs from place to place, the day can move by one depending on where you are.
  • This year: The 2026 date shown here is worked out from sunrise at the place you chose, so in another city the same day can fall a day earlier or later.

வழிபாடும் அனுஷ்டானங்களும்

  • Kalpārambha and bodhan: The morning kalpārambha begins the rite, and in the evening the goddess is awakened under a bel (bilva) tree. With this bodhan the clay image is unveiled and the goddess is invoked into it, ahead of the Saptamī, Aṣṭamī and Navamī worship.
  • Prayer at home: Many households recite the Caṇḍī or the Durgā Aṣṭottara Śatanāmāvalī in the evening and light a lamp. For many, the first darśana of the goddess at the maṇḍapa amid conch shells and ululation is the true start of the Pūjā.
  • Worth remembering: Mahā Ṣaṣṭhī and Akal Bodhon fall on the same day. Mahā Ṣaṣṭhī names the day, Akal Bodhon names the evening rite of awakening, and Durgā Saptamī follows next. Spring Vasanta Navarātri, the Bāsantī Pūjā of Bengal, is still kept in its own season.

குடும்ப மரபும் ஆசாரமும்

How the day is kept depends on region and family. In Bengal the great public barowari pūjās follow the autumn Akal Bodhon, and many Odisha maṇḍapas also begin their Durgā Pūjā with the Ṣaṣṭhī bodhan under the bel tree. Elsewhere the same evening is the sixth day of Navarātri, marked with Kolu, Bathukamma, the Mysuru Dasara worship of Cāmuṇḍī or Garbā. Beyond the general rules, the fullest fruit comes from following the elders of one's own house.
