Attukal Poṅkala is the great women's offering at Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, where millions cook sweet rice in earthen pots on the city streets as thanksgiving to Attukālamma. Poṅkala means 'to boil over', and the overflowing pot is the offering itself. Devotees see the goddess as Kaṇṇaki of the Silappatikāram, who burned Madurai after losing her husband Kōvalan and is said to have rested at Attukal on her way to Kodungallur. Guinness World Records has listed the day among the largest annual gatherings of women anywhere. How the day is fixed: Poṅkala falls on the day when Pūram nakṣatra holds at local sunrise in the Malayalam solar month Kumbham, which usually brings it close to the full moon. Keep in mind: Poṅkala is the ninth day of a ten-day temple festival. This rule gives an approximate date, so confirm it with the schedule the temple announces. This year: The 2027 date shown here is worked out from sunrise at the place you chose, so in another city the same day can fall a day earlier or later. The night before: Women claim their places along the streets the night before, stack bricks into hearths, and wait beside new earthen pots. Lighting the hearths: In the morning fire from the sanctum lamp lights the great hearth before the temple when the chief priest gives the signal. From there the flame passes from hearth to hearth for kilometres. The pot that boils over: Rice, jaggery, grated coconut and plantain are cooked until the pot boils over, which is the auspicious sign. In the evening priests sprinkle holy water on the pots, and only then are they carried home. Worth remembering: Poṅkala shares its sweet rice and its boil-over omen with Thai Pongal, but the two are separate festivals. One is a Kerala temple offering in Kumbham and the other is the Tamil harvest day. Through the ten days, Tōṟṟampāṭṭu songs tell Kaṇṇaki's story episode by episode, and on Poṅkala day women of every background come to cook. In many families the men carry firewood and water. How a vow is made and fulfilled follows each household's custom, and one's own elders remain the surest guide.
