Significance of the day

Bhādrapada's Dvādaśī name is Kalki. The bright twelfth, Kalki Dvādaśī, is a crowded day, shared with Vāmana Jayantī and, when Śravaṇa nakṣatra joins, with Śravaṇa Dvādaśī. Its waning partner is quieter. Kṛṣṇa Kalki Dvādaśī falls in the dark fortnight given to the ancestors, usually the morning after Indirā Ekādaśī, so in most homes it is a pāraṇa day set among the offerings of Pitṛ Pakṣa.

Pañcāṅga rule and reckoning

  • How the day is fixed: The day is the one on which the Kṛṣṇa-pakṣa Dvādaśī of amānta Bhādrapada stands at local sunrise. Pūrṇimānta calendars show the same day in Āśvina.
  • Keep in mind: When Bhādrapada repeats as an adhika month, the extra month's waning twelfth is named Adhika Kṛṣṇa Kalki Dvādaśī. Tithi times are local, so towns may keep the day a day apart.
  • This year: The 2027 date shown here is worked out from sunrise at the place you chose, so in another city the same day can fall a day earlier or later.

Worship and observances

  • Pāraṇa after Indirā Ekādaśī: Those who kept Indirā Ekādaśī for their ancestors break the fast this morning within the pāraṇa time of the pañcāṅga. A short Viṣṇu pūjā at home is usual, and the monthly Dvādaśī has no vrata of its own.
  • Worth remembering: Vāmana Jayantī and Śravaṇa Dvādaśī belong to the bright Kalki Dvādaśī two weeks earlier and are separate observances. None of them falls on this waning twelfth.

Family custom and ācāra

During Pitṛ Pakṣa each family follows its own rules for offerings, food and fasting, and this Dvādaśī is kept inside that pattern. Some homes treat it as an ordinary pāraṇa morning, others fold it into the fortnight's observances for the ancestors. The right course is the one the elders of your own house have followed.

IAST

Brāhmaṇātikrame doṣo dvādaśyāṃ yad apāraṇe | Yat kṛtvā sādhu me bhūyād adharmo vā na māṃ spṛśet || Ambhasā kevalenātha kariṣye vratapāraṇam | Āhur abbhakṣaṇaṃ viprā hy aśitaṃ nāśitaṃ ca tat ||

Ambarīṣa fears both slighting his brāhmaṇa guest and failing to complete pāraṇa within Dvādaśī. He seeks the course that will do him good and let no adharma touch him. He therefore completes the pāraṇa of his vrata with water alone, which the learned regard as both eaten and not eaten.
