Gāyatrī Japam is the morning after Yajurveda Upākarma, when those who renewed the sacred thread give the day to sustained chanting of the Gāyatrī mantra. Upākarma renews Vedic study once a year, and this day carries its saṃkalpa forward with intensified japa, often counted to 1008 or 10008. It is not a public temple festival. It is a quiet domestic observance of Yajurveda families who kept Upākarma on the preceding Pūrṇimā.

- How the day is fixed: The pañcāṅga takes the civil day after Śrāvaṇa Pūrṇimā, the Yajurveda Upākarma day. In amānta reckoning this is Śrāvaṇa Kṛṣṇa Pratipadā, and the previous day is checked to confirm it was Pūrṇimā.
- Keep in mind: The day follows the Yajurveda Upākarma sequence only. Ṛgveda and Sāmaveda families keep Upākarma on different dates, the Ṛgveda one fixed by the Śravaṇa nakṣatra, so their japa day need not coincide.

- Count and study: Common counts are 108, 1008 or 10008, and there is no single authoritative total or muhūrta. Some keep the day under a guru's guidance with a fixed count, and others treat it as general adhyayana.
- Worth remembering: The thread change itself belongs to the preceding day, Yajurveda Upākarma or Āvaṇi Aviṭṭam, which is a separate observance. Gāyatrī Japam intensifies the Gāyatrī already central to daily sandhyā vandanam and does not replace regular sandhyā.
