Guḍhī Pāḍvā opens the year for Marathi households on Caitra Śukla Pratipadā. The gudhi raised at the door, a bamboo staff dressed in silk and crowned with a kalash, marks the new year's welcome at every home. The year's pañcāṅga is read, neem is taken as prasāda, and festive food such as puraṇpoḷī and shrīkhaṇḍ is made. Many choose this day to begin new work, trusting that what starts on the first day of the year will prosper.

பஞ்சாங்க விதியும் கணிப்பும்

• How the day is fixed: The festival is kept on the day when Caitra Śukla Pratipadā prevails at Madhyāhna, as Marathi pañcāṅgas commonly reckon it.
• Keep in mind: Sunrise and Madhyāhna differ from town to town, so the day can shift by one with place. The day is fixed by Madhyāhna, but the gudhi itself is raised in the morning.
• This year: The 2026 date shown here is worked out from sunrise at the place you chose, so in another city the same day can fall a day earlier or later.

வழிபாடும் அனுஷ்டானங்களும்

• Raising the gudhi: The gudhi is a bamboo with silk cloth, a silver or copper kalash, and a garland of neem and mango. It is raised in the Prātaḥ hours, avoiding Rāhu kālam, Yamagaṇḍam and Guḷikai, and it stands until the afternoon.
• Pañcāṅga, neem and puraṇpoḷī: Some homes read the year's pañcāṅga, often around the afternoon while the gudhi stands. Neem is shared as prasāda, puraṇpoḷī and shrīkhaṇḍ are cooked, and many begin new work on this day.
• Worth remembering: Ugādi and Yugādi fall on the same tithi for Telugu and Kannada houses, but they are separate new years with their own customs. Guḍhī Pāḍvā is the Marathi name and the Marathi way of keeping the day.
