Guru Pradoṣam is the Pradoṣam that falls on a Thursday, the weekday of Bṛhaspati, preceptor of the devas. In jyotiṣa Bṛhaspati is the graha of wisdom, wealth and children, so this dusk worship of Śiva is popularly kept with prayers for victory over rivals and obstacles, for prosperity, and for the welfare of one's children. Its standing comes from this weekday and graha link rather than from a legend of its own.

• How the day is fixed: A day is Pradoṣam when Trayodaśī prevails at local sunset. When that Pradoṣam falls on a Thursday, it is Guru Pradoṣam.
• Keep in mind: Local sunset decides whether Trayodaśī holds at dusk, so the Pradoṣam can differ by a day between places. A Pradoṣam that moves off Thursday in your city is an ordinary Pradoṣam there, not Guru Pradoṣam.
• This year: The 2026 date shown here is worked out from sunrise at the place you chose, so in another city the same day can fall a day earlier or later.

வழிபாடும் அனுஷ்டானங்களும்

• Fast and dusk abhiṣeka: The Pradoṣam is kept as usual with a day's fast or phalāhāra, liṅga abhiṣeka and darśana in the Pradoṣa Kāla around sunset, and the fast broken the same evening.
• The guru's shrine: In South India the day is also linked with Dakṣiṇāmūrti, Śiva as the silent teacher, so many devotees visit his shrine in the same temple before or after the Pradoṣa worship. This, like a Thursday prayer to Bṛhaspati, is a popular addition and not part of the Pradoṣam rule.
• Worth remembering: Guru Pradoṣam is one of the weekday Pradoṣams, like Soma Pradoṣam on a Monday and Śani Pradoṣam on a Saturday. What sets it apart is only the Thursday and its graha, since the worship itself is the ordinary Pradoṣam.

Tamil families pair it with Dakṣiṇāmūrti and remember that at Alangudi, the Navagraha shrine of Guru, the presiding deity is Śiva as Āpatsahāyeśvara. Bengali and Odia homes fold it into their Thursday Lakṣmī pūjā and the Māṇabasā Thursdays of Mārgaśīrṣa, while Maharashtra keeps Thursday as Datta's day. Whatever the household's custom, the elders of one's own house remain the best guide.
