Tai Poṅkal is the second and central day of Tamil Nadu's four-day Poṅkal festival and the harvest thanksgiving to Sūrya. Fresh paddy is boiled with milk and jaggery in a new clay pot until it foams over the rim, and the household greets the overflow with the cry 'Poṅkalō Poṅkal!'. The overflowing pot is taken as an omen of abundance in the coming year. Kolams at the threshold and a turmeric plant tied around the pot's neck mark the family's gratitude for the season's yield.
- How the day is fixed: Tai Poṅkal is kept on the civil day of the Sun's ingress into Makara, which is Tai 1 in the Tamil solar calendar. Because it follows the Sun rather than the Moon, it falls in mid-January almost every year.
- Keep in mind: Set the pot to boil in a morning śubha hora before Madhyāhna. Avoid Rāhu kālam, Yamagaṇḍam and Guḷikai, whose timings change with the weekday and the town.
- This year: The 2026 date shown here is worked out from sunrise at the place you chose, so in another city the same day can fall a day earlier or later.
- The Poṅkal pot: A new clay pot, its neck wrapped with a small turmeric plant and often flanked by sugarcane, is set to boil outdoors facing the rising sun. Fresh rice, milk and jaggery boil until they spill over the rim, and the first offering goes to Sūrya.
- Kolam and the farmstead: The threshold kolam is drawn in rice flour around a pumpkin-flower motif. The courtyard, cattle shed and farming tools are cleaned and decorated, so that every implement that helped the harvest shares in the thanks.
- Worth remembering: Bhogi comes the day before and Māṭṭu Poṅkal, the day for the cattle, the day after. Puthāṇṭu, the Tamil new year, is a different day that marks the Sun entering Meṣa in mid-April.
Households differ in small ways, such as whether milk is set boiling before the rice is added or which direction of overflow is read as the better omen. Border and diaspora Tamil families keep the same pot and cry wherever they live, while neighbouring regions mark the day as their own Saṅkrānti. What goes on the leaf for Sūrya and how the tools are honoured follow family custom. The surest guide is the way the elders of one's own house have always kept the day.
