Significance of the day

Śrāvaṇa's Dvādaśī name is Dāmodara, Kṛṣṇa bound at the waist with a cord. The bright twelfth is Dāmodara Dvādaśī, and the waning twelfth, which falls about four days after Kṛṣṇa Janmāṣṭamī, repeats the name with Kṛṣṇa in front for the dark fortnight. It usually follows Ajā Ekādaśī, so at home it is chiefly the morning of that pāraṇa. Some North Indian lists also call the same tithi Bachha Baras and connect it with a custom around calves.

Pañcāṅga rule and reckoning

  • How the day is fixed: The day is the one on which the Kṛṣṇa-pakṣa Dvādaśī of amānta Śrāvaṇa stands at local sunrise. Pūrṇimānta calendars, which begin the month after the full moon, show the same day in Bhādrapada.
  • Keep in mind: In a year with an adhika Śrāvaṇa, the extra month's waning twelfth carries the prefix Adhika. Local tithi times can also move the day by one from town to town.
  • This year: The 2027 date shown here is worked out from sunrise at the place you chose, so in another city the same day can fall a day earlier or later.

Worship and observances

  • Pāraṇa after Ajā Ekādaśī: Those who kept Ajā Ekādaśī break the fast this morning within the pāraṇa time of the pañcāṅga. A small household pūjā to Viṣṇu is usual, and the monthly Dvādaśī has no vrata of its own.
  • The calf day of the North: Some North Indian lists call this same tithi Bachha Baras and tie it to a custom around calves. It shares the sunrise with Kṛṣṇa Dāmodara Dvādaśī, which remains the monthly name.
  • Worth remembering: The Dāmodara worship of the Kārttika month belongs to a different season. This waning twelfth of Śrāvaṇa only shares the name.

Family custom and ācāra

Coming in the festive stretch after Janmāṣṭamī, this Dvādaśī is kept very differently across regions. Where the calf custom is known, households may give it more attention, while elsewhere it passes as a quiet pāraṇa morning. Whatever your region does, keep the day the way the elders of your own house have kept it.

Dvādaśī is normally the pāraṇa day after an Ekādaśī fast. Vaiṣṇava law moves the fast itself to Dvādaśī only under specified defects such as Daśamī touching Ekādaśī at Aruṇodaya.

IAST

Yadāruṇodaye viddhā daśamyaikādaśī tithiḥ | Tadā tāṃ saṃparityajya dvādaśīṃ samupoṣayet ||

When Ekādaśī is pierced by Daśamī at Aruṇodaya, that Ekādaśī is rejected and the fast is kept on Dvādaśī.

Pāraṇa within Dvādaśī

Bhāgavata Purāṇa 9.4.39–40.

IAST

Brāhmaṇātikrame doṣo dvādaśyāṃ yad apāraṇe | Yat kṛtvā sādhu me bhūyād adharmo vā na māṃ spṛśet || Ambhasā kevalenātha kariṣye vratapāraṇam | Āhur abbhakṣaṇaṃ viprā hy aśitaṃ nāśitaṃ ca tat ||

Ambarīṣa fears both slighting his brāhmaṇa guest and failing to complete pāraṇa within Dvādaśī. He seeks the course that will do him good and let no adharma touch him. He therefore completes the pāraṇa of his vrata with water alone, which the learned regard as both eaten and not eaten.
