Mātaṅgī Navarātri is the second of the year's two Gupta or hidden Navarātris, kept for nine nights in the bright half of Māgha. It is dedicated to Mātaṅgī, the Daśa Mahāvidyā who governs speech, music and the arts and who is worshipped as a tantric counterpart to Sarasvatī. Tradition says she arose from the austerities of sage Mataṅga, and she is meditated upon as green in colour, holding a vīṇā, with a parrot beside her. The nine nights are held especially fruitful for worshipping the Daśa Mahāvidyās together, and South Indian calendars also call this time Śyāmalā or Rāja-Mātaṅgī Navarātri.

• How the nine days are fixed: The observance runs from Māgha Śukla Pratipadā through Navamī, each tithi counted from local sunrise.
• Keep in mind: Because the tithis follow local sunrise, the first day can shift by one depending on place. Calendars may list the same nine days as Mātaṅgī, Śyāmalā or Rāja-Mātaṅgī Navarātri.
• This year: The 2027 date shown here is worked out from sunrise at the place you chose, so in another city the same day can fall a day earlier or later.

வழிபாடும் அனுஷ்டானங்களும்

• Worship at home: Like its Āṣāḍha counterpart, this Navarātri is kept privately at home for sādhanā. A lamp is lit and the Śyāmalā Daṇḍakam, attributed to Kālidāsa, is recited along with the Lalitā Sahasranāma.
• Offerings and learning: Students of music often place their instruments and books before the Devī. In Śākta tantra her worship is distinctive for accepting ucchiṣṭa offerings, a deliberate reversal of ordinary purity rules that shows the Devī stands beyond such distinctions.
• Mātaṅgī and Varāhī: In Śrīvidyā tradition Mātaṅgī and Varāhī stand on either side of Devī Lalitā Tripurasundarī. Mātaṅgī is her minister and stands for the wisdom of Sarasvatī, while Varāhī is her commander and stands for the protection of Lakṣmī, and the Lalitā Sahasranāma names them both.
• Worth remembering: Vasanta Pañcamī, the day of Sarasvatī Pūjā, falls within these nine days but is a separate festival with its own day. The other Gupta Navarātri, in Āṣāḍha, is Varāhī Navarātri.

Because this is a hidden Navarātri, much depends on the upāsanā a family has received. Śrīvidyā households may keep all nine nights with japa, while others only light a lamp and read a stotra, and in many regions the fortnight is remembered more for Vasanta Pañcamī and Ratha Saptamī. Whatever the practice, it is best to keep the days as the elders and teachers of one's own house have shown.
