Śaṅkara Jayantī marks the traditional birth of Ādi Śaṅkara, the eighth-century teacher who consolidated Advaita Vedānta. Hagiography places his birth at Kalāḍi in Kerala, on the banks of the Pūrṇā (Periyār), to Śivaguru and Āryāmbā after long prayer to Śiva. He mastered the Vedas as a child, took sannyāsa young, studied under Govinda Bhagavatpāda, defeated rival schools in śāstra debate and travelled India establishing four maṭhas. His Brahmasūtra-bhāṣya and hymns such as the Bhaja Govindam and Śivānandalaharī are why the day is kept as a guru's remembrance.

- How the day is fixed: Śaṅkara Jayantī is kept on the day when Vaiśākha Śukla Pañcamī prevails at local sunrise. It usually comes two days after Akṣaya Tṛtīyā.
- Keep in mind: In the Tamil calendar the day falls in Cittirai or Vaikāsi, and in the Malayalam calendar in Mēṭam or Iṭavam. Because the civil date follows sunrise reckoning, confirm it against a local pañcāṅga.

- Worth remembering: Akṣaya Tṛtīyā falls two days earlier in the same bright fortnight and is a separate observance. Śaṅkara Jayantī is kept as a day of remembering the Ācārya through his own words.

Whether the day means a single meal or one verse sung with care, following the practice of one's own elders honours the Ācārya best.
