Samaveda Upakarma is the day Samavedi households reopen the year's Vedic study by the rule of the Gobhila Grihya Sutra, on the day Hasta stands in Sangava in Bhadrapada Shukla. The old year's study is formally closed with utsarjana, a mahasankalpam asks prayaschitta for the year gone by, and a new poonal is worn. It renews each family's bond with the Veda it carries.

- How the day is fixed: The day is the one on which Hasta nakshatra stands in Sangava, the second of the five daylight parts after sunrise, in Bhadrapada Shukla. If that day carries a sankranti or an eclipse, Hasta in Sangava in Shravana is taken instead.
- Keep in mind: Gobhila also names Praushthapadi, the Bhadrapada full moon, but the day kept is the Hasta day, not that full moon and not Yajurveda's Shravana Purnima. It often falls close to Vinayaka Chaturthi, which is a different festival.
- This year: The 2027 date shown here is worked out from sunrise at the place you chose, so in another city the same day can fall a day earlier or later.

- Sandhya and Brahmayajnam: The day begins with sandhyavandanam on the old poonal. Those who keep the fire do samidadhanam, then comes madhyahnikam, and then Brahmayajnam with Gayatri and the opening mantras of the Vedas.
- Panchagavyam and mahasankalpam: Panchagavyam is prepared from the five gifts of the cow as the prayoga directs. The mahasankalpam names place and time and asks prayaschitta for the year, and a sip of panchagavyam is then taken.
- New thread and kankana: Utsarjana tarpanam is offered on the old thread to close last year's study. A new poonal is then worn with the yajnopavitam mantra, the old one is given to water, and a kankana is tied on the wrist.
- Worth remembering: Avani Avittam, the Yajurveda Upakarma, falls on Shravana Purnima, and the Rigveda Upakarma follows Shravana nakshatra in the month of Shravana. Gayatri Japam is the morning after the Yajurveda Upakarma, not after this day.
