நாளின் மகத்துவம்
Vasant Pañcamī is Sarasvatī's principal spring festival, when she is worshipped as the goddess of speech, learning, music and the arts. It opens the season of spring, and yellow flowers and clothes echo the mustard fields in bloom. Many families choose this day for a child's first writing, believing that learning begun under Sarasvatī's gaze will flourish. In Bengal and Odisha it is the Sarasvatī Pūjā of every school and home, while in the South the goddess's great worship stays with Navarātri.
பஞ்சாங்க விதியும் கணிப்பும்
- How the day is fixed: The festival is kept on the day when Māgha Śukla Pañcamī prevails at local sunrise. By the civil calendar it usually falls in January or February.
- Keep in mind: Māgha is the same month in both the amānta and pūrṇimānta reckonings for the bright fortnight, so the name does not change across regions. Because the tithi is read at local sunrise, the day can differ by one between distant places.
- This year: The 2026 date shown here is worked out from sunrise at the place you chose, so in another city the same day can fall a day earlier or later.
வழிபாடும் அனுஷ்டானங்களும்
- Sarasvatī Pūjā: Books, pens and musical instruments are placed before the goddess, often with yellow flowers and sweet yellow rice. Many recite the Sarasvatī Stotram beginning Yā Kundendu and the Sarasvatī Aṣṭottara.
- First writing: Many families initiate children into first writing (vidyārambham or akṣarābhyāsa) by guiding them to trace letters in rice flour or sand before Sarasvatī or a stack of books. This marks the auspicious opening of study for the season.
- Regional colour: North India keeps the day as Sarasvatī Pūjā with yellow offerings and instruments placed before the goddess. Bengal ties it to spring and honours Sarasvatī just before the examination season, while Kerala's formal akṣarābhyāsa more often falls on Vijayadaśamī.
- Worth remembering: Navarātri's Sarasvatī Pūjā and Āyudha Pūjā are separate autumn observances in Āśvina. Vasant Pañcamī is the spring Sarasvatī day of Māgha and should not be confused with them.
குடும்ப மரபும் ஆசாரமும்
Each family and region colours the day in its own way. Some homes fast until the pūjā, some bring a child for first writing, and in Gujarat many simply count it an unseen auspicious hour for weddings. Knowing the general rule is good, but the surest path is to keep the day as the elders of your own house have always kept it.
